We enjoyed staying at the place, Julian is a very kind and welcoming host. The place is beautiful and clean. Equipped well and kids friendly. We eat from the fige and the apricot trees in the sweet garden. The location is perfect by the river, the ice-cream shop and a cool neighborhood of Basel

Basel home away from home
I highly recommend this home for your Basel stay. Not only is it well equipped and very clean, but the beds and pillows are so comfortable, it is close to transit and is only 2 blocks to the Rhein. Julian is such a warm gracious host who truly cares about your comfortable stay. He knows all the best spots and even recommended an incredible tailor for a last minute repair. This is your home away from home. Thank you Julian!!

Perfect Stay
Lungo Mare is lovingly furnished and charming get-away on a quiet side street only two bocks from the scenic and lively Rhine-river bank. Julian, the tenant is very forthcoming and uncomplicated. He is a perfect source for advice on places to visit off the beaten track. Looking forward to coming back! Christine & Michael

Lungomare basel
Great location to basel trams and communication with Julian. I am not sure about the shower in the kitchen and the toilet being outside the apartment. I guess it’s the original touch of the place. The place it’s nice and warm in winter time. We loved the cozy dining room with the big table.

Appartement atypique

Fantastic location
We booked this for two couples for late August. The apartment is in an amazing location, very close to the Rhine, near bars and restaurants and at least three grocery stores. Julian was very helpful in assisting us prior to our trip and kept in contact whilst we were there to see if we needed anything. The apartment has two good sized bedrooms and everything was spotlessly clean. It’s a bit quirky having the shower in the kitchen, but hey it actually works. And the location of the toilet wasn’t a problem either, keeps everything private! Julian had provided everything we needed, including towels and tea, coffee etc. I would thoroughly recommend Pensione Lungomare if you are considering visiting Basel. Good value for money. The added bonus of having a free Baselcard which gave us unlimited travel on public transport was greatly appreciated. Thanks Julian for a great few days, pity the sun didn’t shine enough for us to try the rooftop terrace!!

Wunderbarer Aufenthalt

5 stars in spite of deficits
Julian was a wonderful, responsive host, and this was a very pleasant place to stay. The 5 stars are not Hilton Hotel 5 stars; they are 5 stars for a very relaxing, pleasant apartment where we stayed for 1 week. This is in spite of several lacks: no dishwasher, no tv, no microwave. The lack of a microwave would be so easy to solve – a couple hundred dollars, and the space is right there on top of the refrigerator. That would reduce flat working space in the kitchen, but that too could be easily solved with 2-3 additional tabletops specially made to fit in the available spaces and be as high as would be helpful. And the bathroom is indeed outside and down the hall, as other reviews have noted. There is a little bit of traffic from the other apartments coming down the nearby stairs which could surprise you, so you can not go to the bathroom in your underwear, but no one else actually used the bathroom while we were there, and we adjusted to this unusual situation without much difficulty. Some things to keep in mind: all the electrical outlets are the type that has 3 prongs in a semi-circular pattern, so come with your own supply – there are only 2 adapters in the apartment that convert these unusual outlets to the usual European outlets. If the gate to the courtyard is locked and you want to go to the shared terrace, the key is in the desk drawer. The name of the tram stop is Blasiring, and it really is easy to ride 6 stops to the Market Stop in old town and then return to Blasiring. Julian gives an amazing gifts to all renters, a free pass to all public transportation in the city, which removes all the stress of changing money to get tram tickets – he has to register each guest individually with the city, and it is wonderful for him to do that for all of us. We definitely enjoyed our time in this apartment, would recommend it to our friends, and would be very happy to return there ourselves.

Truly Home Away From Home
I’ve been coming to Basel for 15 years for work. I usually travel with a crew of 2 or 3 extra coworkers. After staying multiple other places, I happened upon the Lungonmare about 6 years ago, and my impression of what Basel could be was forever changed. Julian is the consummate host. From his list of things to do and places to go, he is also greatly attentive. And extraordinarily helpful. Even when one of our crew had forgotten his passport and we thought he would miss the flight, Julian dropped everything to get him back into the residence and help get him back to the States in time. Truly above and beyond. More than just a place to lay your head, the Lungonmare feels like home. So, it’s not an exaggeration to say the friendships we have as co-workers only get better when living together here. The proximity to the Rhine is fantastic. If you want to have a way to spend a day and work up a great dinner appetite…grab a float bag. Jump on the tram and the bus. Go to the Tingluy Museum. Enjoy the museum. And then get in the river just behind the museum and take a nice float back down to the Lungonmare. Only a block off the river, it really couldn’t be more convenient. As others have mentioned, the Basel Card is key for taking trams and busses in Basel for free. And is something normally limited to hotels. If that’s not your fancy, one can always utilize one of the bikes provided to noodle around town. Honestly, I could write a book about the fun times myself and others have had staying here. All I can say is, if you want to get a great Basel experience, don’t pass up the chance to stay here. There really isn’t anything like it. And, as always, thank you Julian for giving us a place to stay every year. Every time we bring someone new, we talk about the apartment affectionately, and always let them know how much they’re going to love it. And they always do.

“Basel Card” included!
My two kids (10 and 8) and I had a great stay at Lungomare. The “Basel Card” is included and allowed us to travel on public transportation for free – even on a Rhine boat – and enter museums with a 50% discount. There are at least ten museums that are interesting for families such as the paper museum (Papiermühle), Tinguely, Vitra Design, anthropology museum (Antikenmuseum) and my favourite: the Foundation Beyeler – a beautiful bike path takes you there. The apartment does not have distracting things such as a TV, but instead a surprisingly interesting collection of books, DVDs and some toys for kids and a very unusual cook book by artists. Several of the quirky things such as a weird bed side lamp put a smile on my face. I especially appreciated the thoughtfulness of a yoga mat, a water-proof swim bag for Rhine swimming adventures, an umbrella and well equipped kitchen. If you cannot deal with not having a dishwasher or mind having a shower in the kitchen, then this place is not for you, though. In that case a more expensive place might be more appropriate. No place I know of can beat Lungomare, though: location, price, character, spaciousness and amenities. I would love to come again – with the family or for a date weekend just with my husband.

Retro Charme

Excellent! Location, Location, Location…
What a charming, lovely and well equipped apartment. We had a 4 day stay and it was perfect for us. Metres from the river, shops, restaurants, parks and trams. Well equipped and spotlessly clean. Yes the shower is a little unusual, but so what! It’s not a surprise and if you need an ensuite and a small room then book a hotel. This was a spacious, roomy, comfortable place to base ourselves and was super for our baby. High chair, safe, cot and even a couple of books and toys . It’s charming and the owner Julian is fabulous. Friendly and very interesting and helpful. So kind and everything was so easy, the directions, the free transport cards, bikes and even a delicious bonus of some local cherries which were in abundance when we stayed. Nothing to fault. We loved it and we hope to be back. Thrilled we found it! Thanks again.

Really good value for money and great location by Rhine River
The apartment was basic but had everything you needed and was clean, with plenty of extra bedding and towels etc. The kitchen is fairly small and includes the shower which is a strange layout, but worked fine. The toilet is located outside the main apartment which wasn’t great in the middle of the night but again no real problem. Some really nice touches like a fully stocked kitchen and a teddy bear left for my 3 year old son. The location was great and we loved all the recommendations. Really good value for money and we will definitely stay there again when we return to Basel.

Fantastic, cosy and quirky apartment
We stayed in Pensione Lungomare for one week while my husband was working in Basel. The owner, Julian, was extremely helpful and considerate and looked after all our needs. The apartment itself was beautifully warm and cosy, the kitchen (which quirkily also housed a shower) was very well stocked with all manner of kitchen utensils and both bedrooms were a good size. The apartment is very near to the river, which our children loved, and is a 25 minute walk from the city centre. The only drawback for me was the loo, which was situated outside in the corridor and was rather cold, as we were there in December. But, aside from that the apartment was perfect and a great place to stay. Thanks Julian!

A really pleasant hostel to stay either a short or a long period in Basel, very nicely situated in a quiet road of Kleine Basel, near the Rhine river, well communicated, with nice natural light and lots of space. The typical Swiss layout of the toilet outside and a shower in the kitchen is surprisingly not bothering at all.

5 star stay in centre of Basel
Excellent position , right in the centre, Julian was perfect host, room were spacious and even better looking than on photos. Two large bedrooms, 1 with double bed and other one with single and double bed. Shower is in the kitchen but don’t let this put you off, heating was perfect in the apartment and we liked it there.Dinning room and kitchen were big size too. I found nice bar near apartment, and few food shops. It was very easy to find it from airport, 30min ride on the bus and tram. Julian provided us with free transport tickets during our stay which included rides to airport and to Germany and France by tram(its 10min away frm centre) River is near and beautiful 10 min stroll by river will take you to bridge to old town or you can just take tram. Basel is very expennsive compared to England but it beautiful and worth a visit, I would recommend this apartment to my friends and family

Dear Julian Thanks that we could stay at your place. For us it was a very warm and welcome place. We feel very comfortable. You didn’t change the old character of this cosy place – that’s what we like! For some people it might be very unusual that the shower is in the kitchen and the loo on the floor out of the flat, but that’s the history of this charming old houses. Lovely home away from home
We had a great time staying at Pensione Lungomare recently. After we arrived, Julian came over to say hello and invited us over to his place for coffee. My husband was working so it was just me and my daughter for a lot of the time; Julian popped over to invite us out for dinner by the Rhine. He also left some fruit at our door! The apartment itself is great; nice and spacious with a kitchen filled with lots of condiments for cooking. My daughter loved the shower in the kitchen and so did I – the water pressure was amazing. The location is great – close to public transport, the Rhine, A park and lots of cafes. Be sure to check out Julian’s list of recommendations while in Basel – lots of fantastic tips. Highly recommended!

sunny, comfortable, convenient
I stayed with my husband and two young children (under 5) in the Pensione, and we liked it very much. It was so fun to go down to the Rhine after dinner, and we enjoyed many evenings of sipping beer and swimming in the river. There is also a park very close by that my children enjoyed for the playground equipment and the splashing pools. It was a quick walk to Coop and other markets, and a quick ride back to GrossBasel (the old city, where I worked). In short, it was ideal. The beds were comfortable, the washing machine was always accessible, the neighbors were friendly and kind to our children, we quickly got used to showering in the kitchen and toiletting down the hall (this is not so common in the States!) Julian and his family were wonderful hosts. I would definitely stay at the Pensione again.

Pensione Lungomare is the best place to stay, if you visit Basel, I think. Julian and his team are really friendly and eager to make each guest’s stay as enjoyable as possible. The apartment is beautiful and a real place to feel at home in Basel. Not suitable for snobs, but for all cosmopolitan, nice people. The right place to conquer Basel or just to relax. And the Rhine is just around the corner. Once I was there with my daughter and once with my friend. We have been happy there and I hope I am allowed and welcome to come again.

Perfect long stay place for a family
We – two adults and three kids (12, 14, 16) spent a month in the Pensione Lungomare and we loved it! The location is perfect for quick access into town either on foot, by tram or with the bicycles provided with the apartment. There is a good variety of supermarkets and restaurants close by. The Rhein Promanade is stone-throw away. The apartment is simply furnished, but clean and spacious with everything you need to self-cater, right down to the washing machine. The host, Julian, is very pleasant and makes you feel well taken care of. We had an issue with the free internet access and even though Julian was on holiday, he still managed to give us options and eventually sort out the problem. The only reason I did not put excellent is because the toilet is in the corridor, the shower in the kitchen (its and older apartment), and there is no TV, which some people might find uncomfortable or unusual. We are very much looking forward to our next stay in summer this year.
